What Attracts Them?                  Butterflies are attracted to certain fragrances of flowers. The scent is a signal to the butterfly that the plant contains a sweet nectar that insects find appealing.

Hummingbirds on the other hand are not attracted by smell, but by sight. They are attracted mainly to red-coloured flowers, but they also like purple, white, orange, pink and blue flowers. They are all high in nectar, which is the main diet of the hummingbird.

Birds are attracted to the fruit that some plants produce after flowering. A list of the variety of plants that Medallion Perennials™ and Medallion™ Flowering Shrubs have available below.

Which Location is Best for my Garden?

Both hummingbirds and butterflies prefer sunny locations, they appreciate the warmth. The plants that attract them are mainly sun loving vines, perennials, flowering shrubs and annuals.

The location is also determined by the type of plant purchased. Flowering vines should be supported by an arbor, and the arbor should be placed where you can enjoy watching them from a window in the house. The Medallion Perennials™ and Medallion™ Flowering Shrubs can be mass planted to create a welcoming haven for the winged friends. Planting near a patio, deck or walkway is ideal for this type of garden since you want to enjoy watching the hummingbirds feed.

Choosing the right Medallion Perennial and Medallion Plants

When choosing the plants for your garden remember the flower colours that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. You want a disease and insect free plant with strong growth and a good root system. To check the roots of the plant gently remove the plant from the pot and examine the roots. They should be a nice white and well rooted. If the plant is root bound, remember to disturb the roots by cutting them before planting to encourage new growth.
